Henrique Hilário, a Portuguese goalkeeper, joined Chelsea F.C. on July 1, 2006, from Portuguese club Nacional. His acquisition was at the behest of then-Chelsea manager José Mourinho, who had previously worked with Hilário at Porto. Mourinho sought a reliable backup goalkeeper, and Hilário became Chelsea's third-choice keeper behind Petr Cech and Carlo Cudicini.
On October 14, 2006, Hilário made his debut as a substitute against Reading FC due to injuries to Cech and Cudicini. His starting debut came on October 18, 2006, against Barcelona in a UEFA Champions League match at Stamford Bridge.
During the 2006/07 season, Hilário played 18 games and impressed with his performances. However, upon the return of Cech (in February 2007) and Cudicini, he reclaimed his spot on the bench. Despite occasional appearances and impressive displays in the 2007/08 season, Hilário remained a backup option.
On January 26, 2009, Cudicini left Chelsea for Tottenham Hotspur, leaving Hilário as the club's second-choice goalkeeper. On November 9, 2009, he earned his first call-up to the Portuguese national team by Carlos Queiroz.
On June 13, 2011, Hilário extended his contract with Chelsea, ensuring his place as a valued member of the squad. Throughout his time at the club, he consistently provided reliable cover for his predecessor and established himself as a respected goalkeeper in his own right.
